“Just a Sample”

Communion Meditation, Sunday, May 10, 2026

Every so often, when my mom, Esther, or my wife, Lindsay, or my daughter, Hannah are cooking or baking some delicious meal, every so often, I get bestowed the blessing of getting a sample. “Come here, you’ve got to try this! Here…sample this!” And if I’m stealthy enough, I can sometimes sneak a couple more bites, but even that is not much. But it is enough to get a foretaste of the coming feast.

And in a way, Communion is just like that. What do we have here? Just a fragment of bread and just a sip of wine or juice. It’s not much, but it is enough to remind us of the feast that’s coming. We’re told in 1 Corinthians that in Communion we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. It’s just a sample, but it’s a powerful symbol of hope. The Bible speaks of sitting down at Christ’s table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob…with all the saints restored. And aren’t you so glad that your name is on the guest list for that great feast to come. So here…sample this…and let it whet your appetite for the feast of Divine love and joyful fellowship that awaits all who believe.
