Communion Meditation 06.28.26

I have very fond memories of growing up and watching the fireworks on the 4th together with my family and friends. As the colorful streaks lit up the sky, in those brief moments all of us watching and participating were one. We sensed the unity in our citizenship. We saw the light piercing the darkness and sensed the joy. Even as a little kid I got the feeling that I was part of something much greater than myself. That all of us were passive recipients of something beautiful that’s been done for us. And even though the fireworks reminded us of the bombs bursting in air so many years ago and the sacrifice that won our freedom. The spirit of the whole memorial celebration was victory and joy.

And in a way, communion is just like that—this table is a visible reminder of the victory that’s been won for us. It’s a visible reminder of the unity that we share as the citizens of heaven, that each one of us are part of something much bigger than ourselves. And even as we reflect upon the sacrifice of Christ that secured our freedom we need to remember that Communion is not a dark cloud over the service. It’s the booming bright firework of God’s love. It’s the visible reminder that we have much to celebrate, that we are passive recipients of the most beautiful thing that’s ever been done for us, that the Light of the world has pierced the darkness, has secured our freedom from sin’s penalty, enslaving power, and one day from it’s very presence, and he has made us citizens of the country and the kingdom that’ll last forever. So let’s rejoice and celebrate together because our Savior still fills the darkness with light.
