People typically either ignore the Book of Revelation or have an unhealthy fascination with it. And yet, this book was given so that people like you and me can understand it and apply it to our everyday lives. We don’t have 65 books that are profitable for life and living; we have 66. But how do we make sense of a book with such strange language and so many peculiar images?
In 2015, at Truth Point Church (PCA), I set out to answer this question by doing an overview series on the Book of Revelation. I offered an often neglected orthodox view on this mysterious book. Below is the sermon audio from Part 1 (Revelation ch’s 1-10) of this gospel-centered, exegetical study.
1. Revelation 1:1-3 – “The Book of Revelation”
This introductory message highlights five key characteristics that are essential to understanding this puzzling book.
2. Revelation 1:4-8 – “The Lord God Almighty”
In what you could call John’s second introduction, John gives his readers great comfort by teaching them the doctrine of the Lord and the coming of the Lord. The key to joy in the trials of life is the love and sovereignty of Jesus Christ.
3. Revelation 1:9-20 – “Your Jesus is Too Small”
Often times, the reason our problems seem so big, is because our view of Jesus is too small. John seeks to encourage his readers with the voice, vision, and victory of Jesus that he describes in this passage.
4. Revelation 2 – “The Seven Letters (Part 1)”
At a time when many people are giving up on the church, we must remember that Jesus gave himself up for the church. And he continues to love and speak to his church. In these seven letters, Jesus speaks to the church with encouragement and conviction, with hope and authority.
5. Revelation 3 – “The Seven Letters (Part 2)”
The one solution for changing a culture that is held out to us in Scripture is a revival and reformation of the church. This message explores that theme while giving another overview of the letters and a handful of practical lessons.
6. Revelation 4 – “The Throne of God”
Americans tend to struggle with the thought of someone seated on a throne with ultimate power and complete control, yet the Apostle John teaches us in this chapter that God can be trusted with that type of authority, and that the throne of God is one of the keys to peace in life.
7. Revelation 5 – “Worthy is the Lamb”
This chapter teaches us about the scroll and the Lamb. This sermon explains the nature of the scroll and the significance of the Lamb. What is God’s kingdom like? How is it officially established? How is Jesus like a Lion and like a Lamb, and what does this all mean for our lives?
8. Revelation 6 – “God’s Mercy and Judgment”
How can God be a God of mercy and a God of judgment? This sermon explains the first six seals and shows how they help to make sense of the Book of Revelation and to understand the heart of God.
9. Revelation 7 – “Who are the People of God?”
God’s people are often misunderstood and mistreated by the world. This chapter and message seeks to comfort believers by reminding them of who they are in Christ.
10. Revelation 8 – “Does God Really Answer Prayer?”
The act of prayer is mysterious and filled with many unanswered questions. One question regarding prayer that is not meant to be unanswered is whether God answers prayer or not. This sermon explains the prayers of the saints and the trumpets of the angels and what they can teach us about prayer.
11. Revelation 9 – “True Repentance”
In this very challenging and perplexing chapter we learn about the events leading up to the destruction of Jerusalem and what it teaches us about the doctrine of repentance. What is repentance? And what leads us to repentance?
12. Revelation 10 – “The Lord of All”
The heart of Christianity, and the central Christian confession, can be summed up in seven words— Jesus Christ is the Lord of all. This message is an exposition of Chapter 10 of Revelation presenting the Lordship of Jesus and how that relates to human history and our everyday lives.
